BSNL has officially stepped into India’s 5G landscape with the announcement of its new high-speed service—Quantum 5G, branded as BSNL Q‑5G. This announcement marks a turning point for the state-run telecom provider as it positions itself for a comeback in an industry dominated by private players like Jio and Airtel.
The name "Quantum 5G" wasn’t decided behind closed doors. BSNL launched a public campaign inviting name suggestions from users across the country. After receiving thousands of entries, the company finalized "Quantum 5G" to reflect next-generation speed, innovation, and a bold leap into the future. In its official statement, BSNL acknowledged the people’s contribution with the message: “You gave it a name, we gave it life. Together, we launch a service that’s set to redefine connectivity in India.”
Alongside the branding announcement, BSNL’s UP East circle launched its first commercial 5G service—a SIM-free Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) solution meant for enterprises. Known as BSNL Q‑5G Enterprise, this new offering delivers ultra-fast wireless internet without a SIM card or cables. Priced at ₹999 per month, it aims to provide reliable and secure broadband performance similar to dedicated leased lines. Initially available in select business zones, this rollout is BSNL’s first step into real-world 5G deployment.
Before scaling consumer access to Quantum 5G, BSNL is focused on strengthening its nationwide 4G infrastructure. The company has already deployed over 84,000 of its planned 100,000 4G towers under a major government-supported modernization plan. This robust 4G foundation is crucial for a stable transition into full 5G services. Supported by an ₹89,000 crore revival package from the Indian government, BSNL is working in partnership with Indian telecom hardware companies to ensure its network is built entirely with indigenous technology.
As for consumer 5G access, BSNL plans to launch public Quantum 5G services once its 4G backbone is fully operational across the country. The rollout will start in metropolitan areas and gradually extend to semi-urban and rural regions. The company is also exploring future-ready technologies like Open RAN and cloud-native infrastructure to ensure scalability and flexibility in the long run. Plans for private 5G networks catering to industries such as healthcare, education, manufacturing, and logistics are also on the horizon. You named It. We made it happen!
